Why fans are convinced Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s relationship is over

Ariana Grande fans have become convinced that the singer’s relationship with Ethan Slater is doomed.

The singer, 32, dazzled at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday evening, taking home multiple awards including Video of the Year.

But one particular moment during the event left many worried that she and Ethan, 33, might be headed towards a split.

Ariana posed with BLACKPINK member Rosé during the awards show, and hoards of social media users across the globe believe the two stars taking a photo together is not a good sign for her romance with Ethan.

Why? Well, for years, there’s been a viral rumor that Rosé is ‘cursed,’ and that every person she poses with ends up ending their relationship soon after.

Fans are obsessed with the inside joke that the New Zealand-born singer is behind a number of high profile splits – including Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn as well as Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik – simply after being pictured in a photo with them. 

Fans firmly believe that the K-pop star has a mythical, supernatural ability to cause break-ups, and many took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their fears over Ariana and Ethan after seeing the Dangerous Woman songstress’ new photo with Rosé.

‘Oh Ethan, I’m so sorry,’ one fan captioned the snap of the two women together at the VMAs.

‘The curse continues…’ someone else chimed in.

‘Ethan pack your bags homeboy,’ read a fourth tweet.

A fifth said, ‘Oh it’s over.’ 

‘Rosé strikes again,’ a different user added.

According to Know Your Meme, the theory went viral on social media in 2023, as fans started to point out the eerie timings of Rosé’s snaps with A-listers in relation to their break-ups.

In 2021, Rosé – whose real name is Park Chae-young – shared a glam Instagram story with supermodel Gigi. 

The duo stunned in the post taken in September enjoying an evening at the Met Gala.

Elsewhere, Rosé and Bella Poarch struck up a friendship in 2021 – and the duo were snapped together in paparazzi photos the summer of that year.

The following year, Bella announced that she was filing for divorce from her husband of four years, Tyler – after being married in secret.

Meanwhile in late 2022, Rosé had a fangirl moment as she posed for a photo with Taylor at the VMAs.

Just a few months later, in April 2023 rumors first swirled that she and actor Joe broke up after six years together. 

Florence Pugh and Rosé also had fans swooning as they posed alongside one another at the opening of Tiffany & Co.’s Brand Exhibition in London in June 2022.

The pair were in visibly high spirits as they made a glamorous appearance and laughed while embracing each other in the photos.

Ariana and Ethan famously fell in love on set of the movie adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Wicked.

Their romance was first brought to light in July 2023, just days after it was reported that Ariana had split from her then-husband, Dalton Gomez.

Their relationship caused quite the uproar online – especially because it was said that it began while the actor was still with his now-ex-wife, Lilly Jay, who he welcomed a son with one year prior.

A source even told the Daily Mail that Ariana ‘hung out’ with Ethan’s wife Lilly, along with their newborn, on set multiple times before it was revealed that she was dating her costar.

‘They had dinners together in London – and Ariana told Lilly that she wanted to have a baby one day and that she couldn’t wait to start a family.’

Ariana and Ethan – who insisted their relationship started after they both split from their respective partners – have been going strong ever since.

In March, an insider told the Daily Mail that the pair were talking marriage.

‘This has been the most challenging year for Ariana, but Ethan has been her rock,’ they said.

‘She has suggested marriage and her mom is keen for her to have children. She has been for quite some time. 

‘Ariana would like to marry Ethan and believes he is her soul partner. But the relationship has been blighted by so much stress.’
