The Academy Award-winning actress died at 79PEOPLE confirmed exclusively on Oct. 11. While fans will never forget her amazing range (she won an Oscar for her role in romantic comedy Annie Hall and a nomination for dramas Marvin’s Room and Reds), her passion for fashion will also not be forgotten.
When it came to her style, The Godfather actress’ penchant for blending masculine and feminine elements became her signature. Suits and skirts. Bowties and belts. Hats and glasses. The elements together were uniquely Keaton.

Keaton credited her mother as her style inspiration.
“She took me to Goodwill and let me express myself. She was my biggest supporter and manifester of my creativity. Later in life my inspiration came from countless hours of cutting and pasting my way through magazines,” she told PEOPLE.
At the time Keaton, whose mother had turned her onto thrifting, had last done so just days prior with her son. “I picked up a stylish pair of jeans. I think they were only $12!” she said.
At 78, Keaton told PEOPLE that for an outfit to have her signature flair, it must include, “a turtleneck, suit, large belt and of course a hat and glasses!”
“Some things will never change for me,” she continued.

Keaton previously said Cary Grant had a huge influence over her love of hats. In 2024, she did not know what she owned more of: hats or glasses.
“It is a close race,” she admitted, adding, “I couldn’t live without either of them.”
Keaton’s lips were sealed when asked which of her characters’ styles ranked No. 1 in her opinion. (Oh, you know I can’t answer that! They are all honestly my favorite.)
However, the most valuable item in her own closet at the time was “My dad’s sweater,” Keaton said. “I will treasure that forever even though it is full of holes.”

While Keaton’s style was also inspired by some of her most iconic roles, she shared with PEOPLE that much of her onscreen wardrobe actually came from her own closet.
“Normally I let the costumer pick from (there) so I am focused on making sure I get back all of my personal items, to be honest,” she shared.
