Michelle Obama Appears To Take Veiled Swipe At Melania Trump In New Book

Michelle Obama appeared to take a veiled swipe at First Lady Melania Trump in her new book.

In Michelle’s style book titled The Look, which was released on Tuesday, the former First Lady spoke about the importance of portraying a particular tone through her outfit choices.

However, it appears as though the author and podcast host, 61, may have subtly criticized Donald Trump’s wife by making a seemingly pointed reference to the infamous ‘I really don’t care, do u?’ jacket that Melania wore to visit a child detention center in 2018.

‘The work of a First Lady is often about showing up at others’ worst moments – and I never wanted to bring the distraction of fashion into a conversation with a family who had just lost a child or with a community that had been wracked by disaster,’ Michelle wrote in her book.

‘In times of crisis, I would throw on a button-up or T-shirt from my closet and focus the rest of my energy on connecting with the people before me,’ she explained.

The quote featured prominently in the book after being pulled out as a standalone exerpt.

In 2018, Melania was heavily criticized after wearing the $39 green, hooded military jacket from Zara, which she wore before and after a trip to a child detention center in the middle of the immigration crisis.

The trip was intended to underline her compassion for children but her choice of jacket overshadowed the visit.

President Trump took to Twitter, now known as X, soon after the photos of the jacket surfaced online.

He claimed his wife was referring to ‘the Fake News Media’ when she opted to wear the jacket to visit children separated from their families at the border.

It contradicted what Melania’s spokeswoman’s statement at the time, who said that it was ‘just a jacket’ and that there ‘was no hidden message.’

Trump tweeted: ‘”I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO YOU?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares.’

Donald Trump Jr then shared an edited version of his step-mother’s jacket to his Instagram story. It featured a photo of a crying Robert DeNiro plastered on the back of the jacket with the caption: ‘Fixed it!’

In 2024, Melania opened up about the frenzy the jacket caused in her explosive memoir, simply titled Melania.

She called the message ‘discreet yet impactful’ and claimed it was meant to protest ‘anonymously sourced reporting.’

‘I was determined… not to let the media’s false narratives affect my mission to help the children and families at the border,’ she wrote.

‘In fact, I decided to let them know that their criticism would never stop me from doing what I feel is right. To make the point, I wore a particular jacket as I boarded the plane, a jacket that quickly became famous,’ she added.

Elsewhere in her book, Michelle explained that while every choice a First Lady makes is widely scrutinized, she knew her circumstances were a little different.

She opened up about the pressures she faced as the first Black First Lady in the White House, with her style choices often picked apart.

‘I understood that fashion was another opportunity for me to message to the world who I am and what I believe in,’ she wrote.

‘I had the privilege to seek advice from Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, who were especially open and generous,’ the podcast host continued.

She added: ‘While I appreciated their candor, I was mindful that I’d be subject to a different set of expectations as the first Black woman to fill this role.’
