Charlie Kirk shooting suspect arrested – FBI — RT World News
The FBI has announced the arrest of the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, 31, was killed with a single shot in what investigators believe was a targeted attack on Wednesday. Authorities said the shooter, dressed in dark clothing, fired from a rooftop on campus some distance away. The gunfire struck him in the neck as he answered audience questions from a tented stage, sending thousands of spectators fleeing in panic.
“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with the FBI,” agency director Kash Patel said in a post on X Wednesday evening.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the killing as a “political assassination.” Speaking to reporters, Cox said Kirk was “first and foremost a dad to two young children,” but was also politically engaged, which explained why he was on campus.
“Historically, university campuses have been a place where ideas are formulated and debated, and that’s what Charlie does — he goes to university campuses and publicly debates people who disagree with him politically,” the governor said, calling it “a tragic day for our nation.”
Cox confirmed that a person of interest was in custody and that “there is no information that would lead us to believe there is a second person involved.”
Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect. Video circulating on social media appeared to show a man kneeling on the ground in white shorts and a blue sweatshirt, telling officers, “I have the right to remain silent.” Police later said earlier reports misidentifying the gunman were incorrect.
