Hotel heiress Marcia Kimpton spills insider secrets on how to travel in style

Hotel heiress Marcia Kimpton is spilling all her secrets about how you can travel like an A-lister while still sticking to your budget – and do it in style.

Marcia is the heiress of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, and has been traveling ever since she was young, as the daughter of their founder, Bill Kimpton.

Now, as a filmmaker, she’s traveled to nearly 50 countries, and has had adventures all over the world, including ones in her new mock-umentary travel show, An American Abroad.

Although she grew up taking trips with her family, Kimpton told Daily Mail that what really made her fall in love with traveling was when she went to Paris alone at age 18.

‘It just it ignited something in me that hasn’t stopped, frankly,’ Kimpton told Daily Mail in an exclusive interview, explaining that she loves to meet ‘new people’ and ‘new cultures.’

‘I think it’s incredibly important to travel because you find out how human we are and how good people are, and so they may have a different religious background or cultural background, but we’re truly a lot alike, and there’s a lot of good.’

In fact, the director just returned from a trip to Africa, where she was researching locations for her next film.

Now, as a seasoned world traveler, she’s sharing her top tips that will help you get the most out of your adventures.

In Kimpton’s eyes, the most important thing you can do while traveling is hire a local guide to show you around.

‘You have to get a guide in the local area,’ she revealed. ‘Do not be cheap.’

‘I often travel alone and it really changes everything because then you find the great little local dive restaurant, or the dive bar, and you really get the feeling of the culture,’ Kimpton explained to Daily Mail.

Something else that Kimpton suggests is investing in a good piece of luggage that can withstand just about anything.

Her personal favorite brand is Tumi, which she says is ‘durable.’

‘I think your luggage is key,’ the author of Escaping the Hollywood Bardo shared.

‘Because I’ve traveled so much, I find that whenever I buy the cheap bags, they fall apart and they fall apart sometimes right at the belt,’ she said.

And, lastly, Kimpton really recommends being able to be spontaneous on your travels.

‘I think that, if you plan to march, you don’t have any flexibility in finding the gems easily,’ she said.

‘I think that the spontaneity of finding that new place or that new restaurant or that new person that you meet is really what makes traveling so exciting.’

Kimpton even has an app that’s dedicated to helping others navigate their own trips around the world, called Kimpton Travel and Film.

The app, which Kimpton says she is constantly updating, features her top 100 favorite films, as well as her favorite hotel, restaurant and shops around the world.

And, on October 3, the hotel heiress will release her second mockumentary, available to stream on Prime Video, Apple TV+, Fandango, and VOD.

The mockumentary, which she wrote and created with Brian Gross, follows her character, Marcia, as she travels around the world with her younger boyfriend.

‘I wanted to be a travel reporter. I wanted to do what Anthony Bourdain did, and I kind of have done it, but I put it into a movie,’ Kimpton explained.

‘So you think it’s real, but it is not,’ she continued about the film. ‘We do interview real people. There’s about five percent of it that is nonfiction.’

‘It’s about the quirks, and it’s about the comedy, and it’s supposed to bring joy of travel,’ Kimpton shared.

‘It’s supposed to bring laughter in this dark world, and you’re supposed to just have fun watching it.’
