JENNI MURRAY Ive Had Enough Of This Toxic Side

Lizzothe 37-year-old Grammy award-winning singer known as much for her size and support of the body positive movement as her voice, says plus-size women are being ‘erased’. In an essay published at the weekend she wrote: ‘Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do? Sincerely, a person who’s lost weight.’

She says larger women are no longer getting jobs as models, dancers or singers and urges society to undo the effects of what she calls the ‘Ozempic boom’.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a bit hypocritical, since Lizzo has admitted to using the weight-loss drug herself. In the last couple of years, she has come down from just over 23st to a little over 14st.

She says her desire to change her body was the result of a deep depression in 2023.

In the past, she would have had hundreds of dollars worth of food delivered and eaten everything until it felt ‘as if her stomach would explode’.

This time, she decided to turn her ‘inaction into action’. She began with Pilates and lost some weight even though she says that hadn’t been her intention.

That winter, she decided she wanted to lose weight intentionally. She spoke to therapists who said her size had been a protective shield, a joyful comfort zone and ‘even sometimes a super-hero suit to protect me through life’.

I understand exactly what she means by this. I, too, went through a lonely and depressed period when I ate far too much of the wrong kind of food.

I rose to 24st, constantly telling myself that my weight protected me; that I wanted to be valued professionally because I had a good brain, a beautiful voice and the capacity for hard work – not because of the way I looked.

Like Lizzo, I bought into the body positivity movement. I also subsequently went on to use weight-loss drugs to help me shed the pounds.

The difference is, while Lizzo decries Ozempic culture, I believe the likes of Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy are the most transformative breakthroughs in modern science. After all, they have improved the lives of millions. For a long time, though, I was in denial. I ignored the obvious anxiety suffered by my mother, my husband and my children about my weight. I even tried to convince myself that my back and knee pain were not caused by being too heavy and I looked just fine.

Of course, I didn’t look fine and the cause of my pain was evident to all.

It took me years and years of failed diets and sporadic exercise to finally admit I needed help. In my early 60s I had surgery to halve the size of my stomach and lost half my body weight within a year. Pain gone, new wardrobe, the pleasure of easy movement.

It didn’t last. A guest living in my house, cooking calorific food, saw me creep up from 12st to 16.5st.

Mounjaro, my preferred fat jab, did than expected. I was down to 10st 2lb in a year. Much the same weight as when I was a student. I certainly don’t feel I’ve ‘erased’ myself by using the fat jab. On the contrary, I almost feel young again when I see my so-much-thinner body in the mirror. Most important is the lack of pain and ease of movement.

Lizzo was a little reluctant to admit she had used Ozempic, claiming her greatest weight loss came about because of weight-training and cutting calories. She said she had lost weight slowly and her body positivity had evolved into body neutrality, whatever that means. But this summer she finally admitted she had used Ozempic during an interview while adding that it hadn’t been for her

Instead she’s now careful about what she eats – eggs, meat and vegetables – no longer consumes gallons of fizzy, sugary drinks and never eats after 5pm. Whatever she’s doing, it’s working and there’s no sign of her being erased.

Inevitably, Lizzo’s been criticised for losing weight after being so vocal about body positivity for so long. It’s rarely considered acceptable for we ‘greedy, lazy so-and-sos’ to be able to become slimmer without hard work. And I do understand why she’s keen to downplay Ozempic’s role. The cultural conversation around weight-loss drugs has become increasingly toxic.

I’m tired of hearing people criticise those of us who are taking positive action to lose weight. No, we have not stolen drugs from diabetes patients. We have not taken the easy way out.

The medical profession has approved the use of these drugs for obesity. We have taken advantage of highly effective medication in the way an asthma patient would use a puffer to ease their breathing. It’s what medicines are for.

The reduction in the number of obese adults and children will save far money than the medicines will cost. So, please, no comments at the end of my articles telling me how fat and idle I am. I’m not so fat any and I never was idle. Simply admire us for making the effort.

There are so many rumours about Strictly, but I’ve no doubt the BBC will bring back its most popular show next year. I’ll still be watching and I’m afraid I won’t be sorry to see Claudia and Tess gone. Since they announced they were stepping down, they’ve become far too giddy – with the judges, the dancers and the celebrities. The new presenters, whoever they may be, need to calm it down a bit and focus on the dancing. That’s what we want – to see a skill learnt and performed beautifully.

I’m here thanks to screening

David Cameron is lucky his wife, Samantha, nagged him to get tested for prostate cancer. But it shouldn’t be down to the wives.

I’m here thanks to the NHS breast screening programme which caught my cancer. It’s only fair that men should have the same attention, with regular screening for prostate cancer.

Crufts is to ban pugs and some bulldogs from competing next year. It’s the right thing to do. We should not be encouraging the breeding of dogs that can’t breathe.

Greta Thunberg goes to beautiful Venice and what does she do? Dyes the Grand Canal green. That, Greta, is pollution, which you claim to detest.

Bring in the new trans rules now

In April the Supreme Court said sex, in terms of the Equality Act, meant biological sex. Thus a trans woman – biologically a man – cannot use a women’s changing room, toilet or take part in a woman’s sport. So simple.

All of us can tell who’s male and who’s female and the inappropriate sex can be simply asked to leave. So why, seven months on, are the civil service, NHS and councils still unsure about what to do?

Come on Bridget Phillipson – Women and Equalities Minister – stop delaying trans guidance. Confusion over access to sensitive spaces must end.
