DC cancels new comic book series as writer ‘celebrates’ Charlie Kirk’s death

DC has cancelled a brand new comic book series on the same day as its launch after its writer made insensitive comments about Charlie Kirk’s death.
Red Hood, which was slated as an ongoing monthly series, was pulled on Wednesday just hours after its first issue was released.
The dramatic move came after its writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, appeared to celebrate the death of right-wing commentator Kirk, who was gunned down during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The conservative commentator, 31, was hit by a single bullet while speaking to a crowd at the public university in Orem at lunchtime after speaking for about 20 minutes.
Taking to Bluesky, Gretchen reposted a news article about Kirk’s assassination.
Alongside it, she wrote: ‘Thoughts and prayers you Nazi b****.
‘Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie.’
Shortly afterwards, DC announced its decision cull Red Hood to retailers, revealing that they will also offer refunds on copies of the comic that have already been sold.

The move to bin the comic series has been slammed by social media users on Reddit, who have questioned the first amendment: the freedom of speech.
There were also many fans who expressed their general disappointment at the cancelation.
‘I’m a regular comic book buyer and I’ve never seen a comic get cancelled so fast in my entire life…
‘I love DC Comics but the management there need to get a f**king grip,’ one wrote.
‘Lame as hell of DC. My partner was really looking forward to this series,’ another said, in part.
Someone else simply branded it as ‘pathetic.’
In a statement to Daily Mail, a representative for DC said: ‘At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints.
‘Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.’
Daily Mail has reached out for further comment.

Red Hood’s first issue was released yesterday, the same day that it was cancelled
Red Hood’s second issue was due for release on October 2, with the third scheduled for November 12.
In a statement sent to retailers, DC said: ‘DC Comics cancels existing orders for Red Hood #2 and Red Hood #3, and any orders for future issues of the series.
‘DC Comics will credit retailers for all invoiced copies of Red Hood #1, inclusive of copies that may have already been sold.’
Red Hood was set to be a continuation of Jason Todd’s story after leaving Batman behind.
DC editor previously Arianna Turturro described it as ‘high-stakes action, a gripping mystery, and raw, unapologetic storytelling.’
She added: ‘Every element of the book highlights the core aspects of Jason’s character — his difficulties with personal connections, his badass training, his brooding hotness, and his violent approach to heroism.
‘Which means he’ll be killing people — a lot. Let me repeat myself: this is the story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for.’
