An Aussie mum of a teenage son has shared the unlikely item that has helped her unlock a ‘genius’ parenting hack.

It only costs $10 – and it’s found at Bunnings.

Podcaster and former radio host Lise Carlaw recently revealed the useful item that would assist any parent – like herself – who had grown tired of constantly yelling out to get the attention of a teenager who is locked in their bedroom.

In a clip from the podcast segment titled ‘The $10 Bunnings Hack that Saved My Parenting’, Lise revealed that the saviour item was a bargain wireless doorbell.

‘I’ve purchased a doorbell,’ Lise confirmed in the TikTok clip shared to their @liseandsarah_ account.

The host and co-founder of Disco Club confirmed to Daily Mail that the item she’d bought was the Arlec Premium 38 Sound Battery Powered Wireless Door Chime, which is available at Bunnings for $9.99.

Lise described exactly how she uses the doorbell, which comes in ‘two parts’ – the push button and the freestanding chime unit.

‘One part lives up in my kitchen, and the other part lives in [my son] Remy’s bedroom.’

Co-host Sarah Wills initially reacted with confusion to this revelation, asking why her business partner’s 15-year-old son would require a doorbell installed in his bedroom.

Lise’s relatable response instantly struck a chord with parents of teenagers everywhere.

‘Calling out to him all the time was starting to grate on my last nerve. I’m sick of the sound of myself,’ Lise said.

The host explained that her son – like many other teenagers – was an avid gamer who frequently sat in his bedroom with a ‘big headset on’.

‘Or, he’s got AirPods in and he’s listening to music, in which case he will never hear me,’ she added.

Lise continued: ‘The doorbell allows me to communicate with him without me raising my voice.’

The on-air host and businesswoman explained that when her son ‘hears the doorbell’, he has ‘an immediate Pavlov’s dog type of reaction’ – lightheartedly referring to the famous experiment about conditioning behaviour.

Now, when Lise rings the doorbell button, she reports that her son dutifully emerges from his room and walks to the kitchen to see what she needs.

‘He loves it. I love it. We all love it. It’s working so well for us,’ she concluded.

The video, which is captioned, ‘Lise. Wins. Parenting’, has been viewed 32,000 times and scored hundreds of likes.

One insightful reply noted that this was a clever communication tool to facilitate a harmonious household.

‘As a parent, this hack is amazing,’ the reply read. ‘You will find yourself not getting as frustrated before you even have the chance to talk to your kid, making communication so much nicer for everyone.’

Perhaps surprisingly, many parents in the comments section revealed that they too had already installed doorbells in their teenagers’ bedrooms.

In addition to being co-hosts of the Lise and Sarah Podcast, the duo also co-founded the popular ladies night out dance party event, Disco Club

‘I have one in all three of my kids rooms. Absolute game changer! I was so sick of “yelling” out to them, drove me insane!’ one parent replied.

‘I’ve been using this for years with my teens. It works fantastic,’ another added.

The recent podcast segment clip also drew replies from parents who had devised their own alternative ways to communicate with bedroom-bound teenagers – without the need for yelling.

One parent said: ‘We use Google Home Minis to broadcast messages through the house.’

Another creative parent said they’d connected a Spotify account to their son’s Xbox.

‘I hijack his music with a custom playlist – and he reads the title of the song to work out what I want,’ the parent explained, sharing an image of the track list that contained song titles like ‘Food’, ‘Come Here’ and ‘Look at the Time’.
